Why is Maha Shivratri on Thu 8 Mar in Sevan?

Maha Shivratri is on Thu 8 Mar: Chaturdashi holds all of nishitha that night, and no other.

Nishitha is Trayodashi; Chaturdashi begins at 04:02 Thu.

Chaturdashi holds all of nishitha, 00:45 Fri–01:35 Fri. Chaturdashi: 04:02 to 03:53 Fri.

One row per day, on one clock (UTC+4). Band: the tithi. Box: Nishitha. Dark strip: night.

Shiva’s worship centres on nishitha, the midnight muhurta. Chaturdashi runs from 04:02 on Thu 8 Mar to 03:53 on Fri 9 Mar, so only Thursday night’s nishitha (00:45 Fri–01:35 Fri) falls within it.

The rule

Phalguna Krishna Chaturdashi (purnimanta) · Magha Krishna Chaturdashi (amanta)

Shiva’s worship centres on nishitha, the midnight muhurta.

Smarta: the night whose nishitha Chaturdashi holds; when it touches both or neither, the later (Nirnayasindhu).
Vaishnava: the Smarta day.
