Why is Maha Shivratri on Wed 26 Feb in Davinópolis?

Maha Shivratri is on Wed 26 Feb: Chaturdashi touches nishitha that night, and no other.

Nishitha is Trayodashi; Chaturdashi begins at 02:38 Wed. Chaturdashi: 02:38 Wed to 00:25 Thu.

Chaturdashi holds nishitha only until 00:25 Thu; then Amavasya. Chaturdashi: 02:38 to 00:25 Thu.

One row per day, on one clock (UTC−3). Band: the tithi. Box: Nishitha. Dark strip: night.

Shiva’s worship centres on nishitha, the midnight muhurta. Chaturdashi runs from 02:38 on Wed 26 Feb to 00:25 on Thu 27 Feb, so it touches only Wednesday night’s nishitha (23:58–00:45 Thu).

The rule

Phalguna Krishna Chaturdashi (purnimanta) · Magha Krishna Chaturdashi (amanta)

Shiva’s worship centres on nishitha, the midnight muhurta.

Smarta: the night whose nishitha Chaturdashi holds; when it touches both or neither, the later (Nirnayasindhu).
Vaishnava: the Smarta day.
