Why is Maha Shivratri on Thu 11 Mar in Midleton?

Maha Shivratri is on Thu 11 Mar: Chaturdashi holds all of nishitha that night, and no other.

Nishitha is Trayodashi; Chaturdashi begins at 09:10 Thu.

Chaturdashi holds all of nishitha, 00:17 Fri–01:06 Fri. Chaturdashi: 09:10 to 09:33 Fri.

One row per day, on one clock (UTC). Band: the tithi. Box: Nishitha. Dark strip: night.

Shiva’s worship centres on nishitha, the midnight muhurta. Chaturdashi runs from 09:10 on Thu 11 Mar to 09:33 on Fri 12 Mar, so only Thursday night’s nishitha (00:17 Fri–01:06 Fri) falls within it.

The rule

Phalguna Krishna Chaturdashi (purnimanta) · Magha Krishna Chaturdashi (amanta)

Vaishnava: the Smarta day.
