Why is Janmashtami on Thu 3 Sep or Fri 4 Sep in Deva?
Smarta · Janmashtami is on Thu 3 Sep: Ashtami holds all of nishitha that night, and no other.
Ashtami holds all of nishitha, 01:06 Fri–01:49 Fri. Ashtami: 23:55 to 21:44 Fri.
Ashtami ended at 21:44; nishitha is Navami.
One row per day, on one clock (UTC+3). Band: the tithi. Box: Nishitha. Dark strip: night.
Krishna’s birth is celebrated at nishitha, the midnight muhurta. Ashtami runs from 23:55 on Thu 3 Sep to 21:44 on Fri 4 Sep, so only Thursday night’s nishitha (01:06 Fri–01:49 Fri) falls within it.
Vaishnavas keep Janmashtami on a tithi that Saptami does not pierce: Ashtami holds sunrise on Fri 4 Sep, at 06:52. Reading the Vaishnava rule by sunrise is Tithika’s convention.
