Why is Janmashtami on Fri 15 Aug or Sat 16 Aug in Progreso?
Smarta · Janmashtami is on Fri 15 Aug: Ashtami holds all of nishitha that night, and no other.
Nishitha is Saptami; Ashtami begins at 12:20 Fri.
Ashtami holds all of nishitha, 23:40–00:25 Sat. Ashtami: 12:20 to 10:05 Sat.
Ashtami ended at 10:05; nishitha is Navami.
One row per day, on one clock (UTC−6). Band: the tithi. Box: Nishitha. Dark strip: night.
Krishna’s birth is celebrated at nishitha, the midnight muhurta. Ashtami runs from 12:20 on Fri 15 Aug to 10:05 on Sat 16 Aug, so only Friday night’s nishitha (23:40–00:25 Sat) falls within it.
Vaishnavas keep Janmashtami on a tithi that Saptami does not pierce: Ashtami holds sunrise on Sat 16 Aug, at 05:37. Reading the Vaishnava rule by sunrise is Tithika’s convention.
