Why is Janmashtami on Thu 18 Aug or Fri 19 Aug in Myshkin?
Smarta · Janmashtami is on Thu 18 Aug: Ashtami holds all of nishitha that night, and no other.
Ashtami holds all of nishitha, 00:12 Fri–00:48 Fri. Ashtami: 18:51 to 20:29 Fri.
Ashtami ended at 20:29; nishitha is Navami.
One row per day, on one clock (UTC+3). Band: the tithi. Box: Nishitha. Dark strip: night.
Krishna’s birth is celebrated at nishitha, the midnight muhurta. Ashtami runs from 18:51 on Thu 18 Aug to 20:29 on Fri 19 Aug, so only Thursday night’s nishitha (00:12 Fri–00:48 Fri) falls within it.
Vaishnavas keep Janmashtami on a tithi that Saptami does not pierce: Ashtami holds sunrise on Fri 19 Aug, at 04:58. Reading the Vaishnava rule by sunrise is Tithika’s convention.
