Why is Janmashtami on Thu 18 Aug or Fri 19 Aug in Diffa?
Smarta · Janmashtami is on Thu 18 Aug: Ashtami holds all of nishitha that night, and no other.
Ashtami holds all of nishitha, 23:50–00:36 Fri. Ashtami: 16:51 to 18:29 Fri.
Ashtami ended at 18:29; nishitha is Navami.
One row per day, on one clock (UTC+1). Band: the tithi. Box: Nishitha. Dark strip: night.
Krishna’s birth is celebrated at nishitha, the midnight muhurta. Ashtami runs from 16:51 on Thu 18 Aug to 18:29 on Fri 19 Aug, so only Thursday night’s nishitha (23:50–00:36 Fri) falls within it.
Vaishnavas keep Janmashtami on a tithi that Saptami does not pierce: Ashtami holds sunrise on Fri 19 Aug, at 05:57. Reading the Vaishnava rule by sunrise is Tithika’s convention.
