Why is Janmashtami on Sun 29 Aug or Mon 30 Aug in Pilón?
Smarta · Janmashtami is on Sun 29 Aug: Ashtami holds all of nishitha that night, and no other.
Ashtami holds all of nishitha, 00:47 Mon–01:32 Mon. Ashtami: 13:55 to 16:30 Mon.
Ashtami ended at 16:30; nishitha is Navami.
One row per day, on one clock (UTC−4). Band: the tithi. Box: Nishitha. Dark strip: night.
Krishna’s birth is celebrated at nishitha, the midnight muhurta. Ashtami runs from 13:55 on Sun 29 Aug to 16:30 on Mon 30 Aug, so only Sunday night’s nishitha (00:47 Mon–01:32 Mon) falls within it.
Vaishnavas keep Janmashtami on a tithi that Saptami does not pierce: Ashtami holds sunrise on Mon 30 Aug, at 06:53. Reading the Vaishnava rule by sunrise is Tithika’s convention.
