Why is Govardhan Puja celebrated? The katha
The day after Diwali, people worship Govardhan, the hill Krishna lifted to shelter the cowherds of Gokul from Indra's rain, and honour the cattle that feed the home.
The Vishnu Purana tells that the cowherds of Vraja were preparing their yearly sacrifice to Indra, lord of the rain. The young Krishna asked them why: they were herders, he said, whose living came from their cattle and the hill where the cattle grazed, so the hill and the cows deserved their worship.
The cowherds agreed and made their offerings to Govardhan and their cattle instead. Indra, angry at being passed over, sent down storm clouds that rained for seven days and nights, to drown the herds and the settlement.
Krishna lifted Govardhan with one hand and held it up like an umbrella, and the people and cattle sheltered beneath it until the rain stopped. Indra, humbled, came to Krishna and honoured him.

Govardhan Puja puja vidhi and samagri
On the morning after Diwali, Govardhan is shaped in the courtyard from cow dung, often with Krishna lying upon it, or a hill is heaped of cooked food, the annakut. Govardhan and Krishna are worshipped with water, roli and rice, flowers, sugarcane and a lamp, the hill is circled, and the mountain of food is offered and then shared. The cows and bullocks are bathed, garlanded and fed, and rest from work that day. Near Mathura people go to the hill itself; elsewhere the puja is kept at home. The Vishnu Purana has Krishna tell the cowherds that the hill and the cattle that give them their living are the ones to be worshipped.
